Warming may freshen Gulf (of Maine) waters

ROCKPORT - The Gulf of Maine probably will have a higher freshwater content as a result of global climate changes, three scientists suggested Saturday at the Maine Fishermen’s Forum.

The scientists stopped short of making predictions on where the apparent trend will lead and what its impact will be on the fisheries.

Andrew Pershing of the University of Maine School of Marine Science explained that climate change is seen in temperature and precipitation averages over a period of time.

Using Friday’s snowstorm as an example, he said scientists look at probability in considering how often it snows on March 2. If, over a period of years, snow is less likely, then some conclusions can be drawn.
