5/31 disaster movie about global warming "The Day After Tomorrow"
Edited on Thu May-13-04 11:22 AM by papau
On Memorial Day weekend, Hollywood is releasing a summer blockbuster movie that's making the Bush administration very nervous. In fact, they'd rather you didn't see it at all. Why? Because it's a disaster movie about global warming.

While "The Day After Tomorrow" is more science fiction than science fact, everyone will be talking about it -- and asking "Could it really happen?" This is an unprecedented opportunity to talk to millions of Americans about the real dangers of global warming and expose President Bush's foot-dragging on the issue.

It's also a fun movie to see with friends over the holiday weekend.

So here's the plan: On Memorial Day weekend, grab a few friends and go see "The Day After Tomorrow" -- the movie the White House doesn't want you to see. At the theater, meet up with other MoveOn members to give out flyers that explain, in everyday language, what causes global warming, how Bush's environmental policies could lead us into a real-life climate crisis, and what we can do together to meet this challenge.

Join in today at:

Please also sign our petition calling on Bush and Congress to prevent a climate crisis, at:

Maybe you've already seen the trailer for "The Day After Tomorrow": tornadoes whip through Los Angeles and Manhattan is frozen over as global warming triggers an Ice Age across North America.

Nearly 20 million Americans are expected to see this movie, with as many as 7 or 8 million over Memorial Day weekend alone. Because the movie capitalizes on our real-life concerns over climate change, audiences are likely to walk out of the theater asking themselves: "Could it really happen?" We'll be there to answer that question with our flyers.

The right wing has already cranked up its PR machine to discredit the movie as "fright flick" propaganda cooked up by climate change conspiracy theorists. Never mind that they're relying on stone-age science, or that they're light-years behind the curve on the public's acceptance of global warming as a real environmental threat.

The news media are already buzzing about our plans. Yesterday, we held a press conference to officially launch the campaign, and stories have already appeared in the Associated Press, the New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times.

We can't afford to wait until the day after tomorrow to address the climate crisis. We hope you'll be part of this fun summer campaign to elevate global warming from movie-house thrill-ride to White House priority.

1. This move and the reactions are disturbing
because after the studies about global warming showing sea levels continuing to rise with the coming inundation of coastal areas worldwide, the movie shows an ice age which means sea levels would fall.

All this is going to do is give a black eye to those concerned with global warning if they use the movie, which contradicts what the public has been told before, as a vehicle to change public opinion. Guess who's going to look like flakes.

Stick with science. The last thing I would do is tout this movie.

Only a few model show run away warming to Venus status - A cold
era is predicted by most after the intial warming.

The only thing agreed is that without moderation - a change in human behavor - VIOLENT - rather than slow modest - change - is to be expected.

4. I Don't Know
I started a thread about this - not sure how global warming could cause an ice age and the thing is that global warming causes the ice shelf to break, suddenly releasing mass amounts of cold water into our ocean, which would in fact cause global cooling.

I guess we'd have to see the movie to really understand it, because based on global cycles, we're due for another ice age anyway although I don't know that it would really be in a matter of days.

Anyway, I'm still torn on seeing it because one part of me says anything to help get Bush out of office - so go distribute flyers w/Moveon; the other part of me just doesn't find even the fictional destruction of large cities and famous landmarks entertaining.

7. Here's how.
"I started a thread about this - not sure how global warming could cause an ice age and the thing is that global warming causes the ice shelf to break, suddenly releasing mass amounts of cold water into our ocean, which would in fact cause global cooling."

No, melting ice caps will change the salinity of the ocean disrupting ocean currents which are thermal transports. The Gulf Stream brings warm water/air to northern Europe. If the stream slows or stops, regional ice events are quite likely

3. I live in Kansas--you know, the "dust bowl"--last night we got 6 inches
of rain. That's like 1/5 of the total rainfall for an average year.

Don't tell me that climate isn't changing . . .

5. The right is foolish to attack this movie...
and we'd be foolish to promote it. This isn't like "The Day After," which well-portrayed a post-nuclear war scenario. This is a fictional piece, along the lines of other apocolyptic movies. The right attacking it is nonsensical and would be perceived as such. If it gets people concerned generally about environmental issues, that's fine--but I don't think anyone should be promoting it as a warning of sorts.

8. Yes. It is a movie. Let's stick with the science.
The science is compelling enough that we have no need to use cinematic propoganda to advocate mitigation policy.

6. I too thought the trailer rocked and cant wait to see it
right after Mean Girls of course. I live really close to Mt Rainier and have been going up to the mountain for as long as I can remember, Last year, the snow line disappeared for the first time for a month at the end of summer. It was the oddest site, I couldn't stop looking at the brown mountain top. Maybe the movie will at least let us talk about global warming and climate change.

9. I'm looking forward to seeing it.
I think the Hollywood version of global warming has a place even if it is not that accurate. Here's a good review by Bill McKibben. I think he puts the movie in perspective.

----------------------------------------------

The Big Picture

Climate change too slow for Hollywood, too fast for the rest of us

by Bill McKibben

04 May 2004
It's always been hard to get people to take global warming seriously because it happens too slowly. Not slowly in geological terms -- by century's end, according to the consensus scientific prediction, we'll have made the planet warmer than it's been in tens of millions of years. But slowly in NBC Nightly News terms. From day to day, it's hard to discern the catastrophe, so we don't get around to really worrying. Something else -- the battle for Fallujah, the presidential election, the spread of SARS, the Jacksonian mammary -- is always more immediate, and evolution seems to have engineered us for a fascination with the sudden.

(much more)

10. This movie is going to be the best thing since sliced bread!
Edited on Thu May-13-04 10:46 PM by Physicist
Until now, the increasing greenhouse gas concentration in our atmosphere was as boring as the national debt. This movie is going to be the best thing since sliced bread!

My own stance is similar to Al Gore's - There are two fictions: the hollywood movie and the idea that Bush's climate change plan is adequate. But Gore was not quite right in saying Bush is denying climate change.

11. Their web site is awesome
There web site is awesome.
It's like one global-warming warning PR site.
I do believe that this movie can make lots of people think twice about wasting energy, especially younger generations.

I do also believe this movie will make right wing nervous.

One of the the factor that may accelate global warming is China factor. They have 5 times more people than U.S. and as their economy grow, so is their fuel consumption.Unless, U.S will show some very seriously good example, China will not do anything about global warming. Their pollution is just getting worse and no regulation in site.

It will be cool this movie become a big hit.
