New Zealand's largest energy company Contact Energy plans to spend $2 billion in the next five years on wind and geothermal power projects.

It says the investment is to meet rising power demand and to cut its exposure to emissions charges on its gas-fired plants.

That includes up to $1b on two geothermal power stations in the Taupo region, and another $1b buying two wind farms able to generate up to 300 megawatts.
