OTTAWA -- Canada would face economic collapse if the federal government pushed harder to meet its Kyoto targets, Environment Minister John Baird warned yesterday, suggesting the damage would be comparable to Russia's post-Communist fall.
The minister's comments to a Commons committee echoed the doomsday predictions of his predecessor, Rona Ambrose, and left opposition MPs questioning whether the minority Parliament will be able to bridge its political differences on climate change.
Instead of meeting Kyoto's targets, Mr. Baird said, industry will soon have new targets to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions starting in 2010. He also called for Canada and the U.S. Congress to craft tougher rules for vehicle emissions that would be accepted by California, where fuel-economy standards are highest.
Mr. Baird met with Canadian Auto Workers president Buzz Hargrove yesterday and he will be in Alberta today to meet with oil and gas officials as he puts the final touches on his promised regulations.
