New York State to sue Exxon Mobil over spill - Reuters
New York State to sue Exxon Mobil over spill
Thu Feb 8, 2007 2:25pm ET

By Michael Erman

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York State attorney general said on Thursday that he
planned to sue Exxon Mobil Corp. over a decades-old oil spill in New York City.

The Exxon lawsuit is intended to force the cleanup of the spillage of 17 million gallons
of oil that polluted Newtown Creek and formed an underground contamination over 55
square acres in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, according to the state. The spill
was discovered in 1978.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said he also intended to sue BP Plc, Chevron Corp.,
utility KeySpan Corp. and mining company Phelps Dodge Corp. over contamination
in the creek.

"This is one of the worst environmental disasters in the nation, larger than the Exxon
Valdez and slower in the cleanup," Cuomo said in a statement. "Exxon Mobil must and
will be held accountable."

NEW YORK -- The state attorney general notified Exxon Mobil and two other oil companies
Thursday that he will sue them over their slow pace in cleaning up a giant, underground
petroleum pond.

In a statement, Andrew Cuomo accused Exxon Mobil of leaving a "toxic footprint" in New
York City, then doing "as little as possible to address the dangers that it created."
