Tucson Electric Power Co. is among a group of utilities considering plans to build a 250-megawatt solar power plant in Arizona or Nevada.

The plant — which would be among the largest of its kind — would help meet requirements approved by state regulators last year that regulated utilities increase the amount of power they get from renewable sources to 15 percent by 2025, TEP Vice President Steve Lynn said.

Lynn said the utilities group, which also includes Arizona Public Service Co., the Salt River Project and some out-of-state groups, is preparing to commission a feasibility study on the power plant concept, which was discussed at meetings before Arizona legislators and utility regulators this week.

Lynn said the solar plant would likely involve "concentrator" technologies that harness the heat of the sun by concentrating its rays with mirrors to power steam generators.
