Congress forms legislation on global warming

As Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced sweeping vehicle-pollution cuts Tuesday, lawmakers on Capitol Hill prepared their own assault against greenhouse gas emissions.

House lawmakers are expected to unveil legislation today that would divert $20 billion in oil subsidies toward the production of alternative fuels.

Meanwhile, California Sen. Dianne Feinstein is putting the finishing touches on a package of five global-warming bills even as a host of other senators, from New Mexico to Illinois, set forth their own proposals for addressing greenhouse gas emissions.

"It's very compelling to see how many senators and members of Congress want to act on this," said Julia Bovey, spokeswoman for the Natural Resources Defense Council.

2. That sounds suspiciously sane.
I wonder if Kunstler doesn't have the right idea. Congress should rather be investing in alternative infrastructure. Public mass transit, in particular.

At any rate, discontinuing subsidies for the richest industry in the world is a good start.
