Washington - "This election season, the nation's politicos-on- the-make are going beyond tree- hugging photo opportunities to celebrate Earth Day on Thursday and make political hay on the environment.
John Kerry will try to show he is an eco-friendly guy by visiting President Bush's home state of Texas and highlighting Houston's pollution problems. Closer to home, Kerry's campaign on Tuesday released a four-page list of ways it says Ohio has been harmed by Bush administration environmental policies.
Bush meanwhile has used his executive powers to declare this "National Park Week" and has planned an energetic Earth Day delivering environmental speeches in Florida and Washington, D.C. - as well as Maine, in Kerry's New England back yard. The Bush campaign Tuesday dismissed Kerry's environmental critiques as "flimsy rhetoric" and "false attacks."

Bush campaign representatives expected such criticism - because, they say, environmental groups never give Republicans credit for needed reforms. "I think it is fair to say that these environmental groups are just another wing of the Democratic Party," said Bush campaign aide Mike Catanzaro, a Cleveland Heights native. The Bush campaign said Kerry's plans to raise gas mileage standards for cars to 36 miles a gallon would "wreak havoc" on Ohio's economy. Former Ohio House Speaker Jo Ann Davidson, Bush's Ohio chairwoman, branded Kerry an "enviro-extremist."
