Des Moines Just Shy Of All-Time Snowless Record For December - DMR

With just over three days left in December, Des Moines is on the verge of tying the all-time record lack of snow since weather recording began in 1884.

Des Moines has received 1/10 of an inch of snow this month based on measurements from the Des Moines International Airport, according to the National Weather Service. That’s the smallest snow measurement used by meteorologists. That's also how much snow was recorded in December of 1889 and again in 2002.

Harry Hillaker, the state climatologist with the Iowa Department of Agriculture, said Des Moines has typically received about eight inches of snow by this time in December. He said both the northwest corner and southeast corners of the state have seen snow, but the middle of the state has missed the storms.

Hillaker says the lack of snow is attributed to warmer temperatures. The average temperature for December in Iowa is around 25 degrees, but so far this month the average temperature is eight degrees above normal.

Not just December, but for the season. The major snow storm of few weeks ago that swept the Midwest including Iowa, I think, stayed south of us.

this has happened before, as long ago as 1889. unusual yes, special, not.

here in so cal we are having a very common december, lots of dry winds, a few fast moving cold fronts bringing less than 1/2 inch of rain and colder air. nice warm days and some frosts at night. nothing unusual, tho to listen to many people you would think this was the most wierd winter in history.

it is not wierd, it is just....ordinary.

6. Consider your location, and then the facts.

Southern California is very well-regulated due to the proximity of the Pacific Ocean first of all. Next, there is the fact that the worst deviations as far as climate change goes are going to occur first at higher latitudes, then in areas which are farther from the regulating effects of the oceans. Find statistics that show the highest and lowest ever temperatures for a given city, and you will find that the extremes in places like Iowa and the Dakotas can be in excess of 150 degrees Fahrenheit! Like Minneapolis which has been as low as -40 and as high as +105. Fargo, ND is even more extreme. LA and San Diego can't make such claims.
