LONG BEACH TOWNSHIP — Long ago, Michael Mercurio developed an affinity for wind.

"I started in wind when I was 7 years old," said Mercurio, now 60. "I loved building kites."

After working in the restaurant, construction and energy-conservation fields, Mercurio launched his own company — Island Wind Inc. — several years ago.

He's been testing a small wind turbine at his township home, studying potential sites for commercial installations of wind turbines, such as at schools, and working on placing "vertical axis" wind turbines along the coastline, among other efforts.
