(Alec) Baldwin moderates (nuclear) power plant discussion (Oyster Creek, NJ)
http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/living/people/16203840.htm

TRENTON, N.J. - Actor Alec Baldwin has lent support to New Jersey residents worried about the relicensing of a southern New Jersey nuclear power plant.

Baldwin moderated a Friday night discussion at Rutgers University Law School in Newark about the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant, which is seeking a 20-year renewal for its license; the license is set to expire in 2009.

Area residents have expressed concern about the plant's safety. The 630-megawatt plant, which is owned by Chicago-based Exelon Corp., is the oldest commercial nuclear power plant in the United States.

"The people who are in favor of the license renewal are looking to line their pockets," Baldwin, who has a leading role in the NBC prime-time comedy "30 Rock," told the Asbury Park Press of Neptune for Saturday's papers. "We don't stand to make any money. Our goal is purely public health and safety."

2. That's weird...
For some reason, the article doesn't give Baldwin's counter-proposal for generating 5TWh a year without burning fossil fuels.

Still it must be jolly good - he's famous, and has really good hair.

3. I'm not one to criticize celebrities from getting involved in causes they believe in
but Alec Baldwin moderating a discussion on Nuclear Power? That's not quiet what I think of as an appropriate involvement of a celebrity.

I mean this is the guy who voiced Dennis in the Sponge Bob movie right? :)

4. Such things should be left to corporate elites?
The essential problem of nuclear power is that the fuel is associated with nuclear weapons and radioactive poisons. The people who run the plants, energy companies, the DOE and the government have all been caught in a running train of lies.

I used to drive up to Bodega Bay CA. where at one time they proposed building a nuclear power plant directly on top of the San Andreas fault. It was only after outside parties noticed and protested did they halt construction. We called it the "hole in the head." Such is the arrogance of the nuclear power industry.

The elites cannot be trusted to look after the interests of the public.

6. Not corp elites but at least someone knowledgeable on the subject I think

scientist, engineer, something like that or at least a layman who's studied the issues for many many years. If Mr Baldwin is that sort of layman then I take back my criticism.

5. I half agree
I see the point but am hypocritical enough to make an exception in the case of one of the few celebs I actually like.
