The End of Suburbia
Edited on Mon Apr-12-04 06:44 PM by Dissenting_Prole
After a month of sleepless nights, I am happy to announce that "The End of Suburbia: Oil Depletion and The Collapse of The American Dream" is complete. The master video goes to the DVD duplicator early this week and should be ready April 20th.

Barry Silverthorn
Producer/editor

Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream.
But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and it's prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply.

2. Well, congrats... I did see one typo on your web page.
Since World War II North Americans have invested much of their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space, affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too the suburban way of life has become embedded in the American consciousness.

Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream.

But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary. The consequences of inaction in the face of this global crisis are enormous. What does Oil Peak mean for North America? As energy prices skyrocket in the coming years, how will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done NOW, individually and collectively, to avoid The End of Suburbia ?

We managed to catch it before the DVD cover went out for printing, but I forgot to update the site.

4. avoid the end of Suburbia?
I think we should encourage it. Given the mindset and the immense infrastructure investment that will be a very hard nut. Curbing population growth and revitalizing cities would help much. Deporting real estate "developers" would be very satisifying.

5. "avoid" as opposed to "prevent"
I really don't think that the collapse of suburbia is preventable, but it is something that people can avoid, if they wake up and take appropriate action (like getting-the-hell-out).

Glad to see it go, myself.

7. No plans yet
Yes, excerpts from the doc were screened at the International Inquiry into 9-11 in San Francisco on March 27. The film introduced comments by Michael Ruppert and Richard Heinberg.

If you would like to screen it in San Francisco feel free to organize an event. Don't wait for the media or the government to inform us.
