Solar Roof Vents
http://www.bestsyndication.com/?q=090106_solar-roof-vent-how-to-buy-install.htm

In today’s society, homeowners are struggling to make ends meet. With electric rates always on the increase, homeowners are hesitant to use any more electricity that is needed. They turn off air conditioners, and even their roof vents. Experts advise that by doing this, they are at risk for even costlier repair.

Solar power is an option that more and more homeowners are tuning to. It has come a long way in recent decades. New technology has brought forth new developments in the industry of solar power. One of these developments is solar roof vents.

<snip>

A solar roof vent is very simply an attic fan that is runs on solar energy instead of electricity. A solar roof vent has a fan that is powered by the sun to remove heat and moisture from attics.

<snip>

A solar roof vent is more efficient than an electric vent because it is working continuously. With electric, the temperature has to reach a certain degree before it starts. Over time, this can damage your home resulting in possibly thousands of dollars in repairs.

1. They are Very expensive ti buy
and IMHO simple, gravity vent units ($15 to $20) will do the job just as well and require no energy except the fact that hot air rises. Maybe W needs one in his ass.

3. Get a Whirlybird
Get one of these.

Don't forget to install a couple of vents under your eaves to go with it if you don't have them already.

4. Whirlybirds?
If you think those actually work, then I assume you've never been in an attic.

5. No. just a low truss roof & I'd call >10 C a decided improvement.
And vents under the eaves are an absolute must for them to work effectively, otherwise they will take air from inside the house through exhasut fans, roof vents, etc. If things are well sealed, you'll get absolutely no help from any sort of attic exhaust/vent. There must be good air flow. (if Winter is a problem, the vents (including whirlybird) will need covers/closable louvres).

If you're looking to live in the attic space, I doubt that any amount of venting alone will be sufficient. I'd suggest two layers of sarking and 4 inches of glass wool as well.

Here in Aust., we rarely live in our attic spaces, just too damned hot for too much of the year. However a whilry bird will improve the thermal characteristics of the roof cavity (attic if you like) enough to give at least a 2-3 C improvement in the living space below.

One final suggestion. If you have a cellar, run a flue from it into the attic space and omit the under eaves vents. A friend uses this alone to keep quite a large shop remarkably cool.
