1. 51.6
Edited on Mon May-08-06 07:40 PM by MelissaB
51.6 on my first tank. Yeah, that's before the car (or owner) has been "broken in". I went 480 plus miles on that first tank.

Edited to say I'm driving a Prius.

2. Ok, I'm gonna cheat but please don't be mad
My wife drives a 2003 RAV4 (non-hybrid) and she gets 34 MPG. Constant maintenance and tires rotated every 6K.

9. Damn!
Is diesel as readily available as gas? Do yo have a problem in winter? I recall my Dad had a diesel truck in Missouri and he had to "plug it in" on cold winter nights.

12. No problem with these new diesels.
They're quiet and just sip the fuel. I find diesel at 3 of every 5 stations.

13. I love RAV4s...
I really hope that by the time I'm ready to replace my current vehicle, that they'll have the RAV out with a hybrid powerplant.

18. The RAV4 We Had Was In the Low 20s (and a 2 door stick-shift at that!)
traded it for a Ford Escape Hybrid that gets almost 30.

We live in the mountains, so our MPGs tend to run low no matter how lightly we tread on the gas pedal.

Only getting low-to-mid 40's on a Prius.

...I kinda thought 30-35mpg was normal for most non-truck vehicles...even old ones.

CAVEAT: I'm a milege geek and have learned to control the accelerator to keep it in electric mode for as long as possible (which is about 2 miles on the flat stretches).

Edited on Mon May-08-06 09:08 PM by benddem
unfortunately most of my town driving is just short trips...take mom to the doctor, clinic, store etc. and I get 38mpg. But out on the road (in the mountains) the car gets 50-60 mpg. Downhill is especially good.
Forgot Prius 2004

24. The easy part most people miss...
Edited on Tue May-09-06 12:42 AM by skids
...is you can bump mileage up a good deal without doing the "gliding" just by learning to use the brakes well. You can sort of feel them cut in from magnetic to friction, and if you just pay attention to what's going on farther up ahead and brake for longer distances, trying to stay off the pads for the first part of the breaking, you get a lot of energy back (and you can tell if you're being effective from the readout "gold stars.")

Doing it in some situations, of course, wil annoy the people behind you, but most people don't care if you take your sweet time stopping for a red light.

I actually kept a log of gallons purchased vs. miles driven. The times I've taken mostly highway journeys, I've gotten about 50 mpg.

17. We need this or something like it for our second car.
Right now we still have a 2002 Expedition that I bought from my stepfather when my mom died. It was her car, and I wanted it. We aren't driving it right now, though. Hubby is still driving his 1993 Altima, and the Expedition is parked.

There are motorists who have measured every tankful since they bought the vehicle. Smile when you say "nerds". :)

23. Being that it is now spring...

In the low 50's, 2002 Prius.

It's in the low-to-mid 40's when it is cold, and in the high 40's when it's too hot to run without AC.

Prius, Civic hybrid owners save money, Consumer Reports now says

By Matt Nauman
Mercury News
Consumer Reports now says it made an error when calculating the cost of owning a hybrid: Owners of the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic hybrids do save money, the magazine said today.

Last week, the organization released a statement ahead of its well-read April auto issue, which hit newsstands today, that said owners of the six most popular hybrid vehicles would pay more than buyers of comparable gasoline-only vehicles over their lifetime of ownership.

Late today, however, Consumer Reports issued a statement acknowledging ``a calculation error.''

``We deeply regret the error,'' said Rik Paul, the magazine's automotive editor, said in the statement.

The new calculations show that owners of the Toyota Prius will save $400 and owners of the Honda Civic will save $300 when compared with gasoline-only counterparts. Owners of four other hybrids -- the Honda Accord, Ford Escape, Toyota Highlander and Lexus RX 400h -- will still end up spending $1,900 to $5,500 more during five years of ownership and 75,000 miles, Consumer Reports said.
