Residents protest forest sale (Missouri)
About 150 gather in Ashland to discuss Bush plan.

By JACOB LUECKE of the Tribune’s staff
Published Tuesday, March 14, 2006

ASHLAND - Nearly 150 opponents of the sale of National Forest land packed the Ashland Senior Center last night to express their displeasure.

Many people in the crowd said they feared the sale would set a dangerous precedent for selling more public land in the future. Others said it was shortsighted to sell public forestland in an area that is quickly urbanizing.

Rosalind Moulton of Columbia said that as development jumps over city boundaries into rural areas, "We’re going to more and more need a place for the public to go."

Bill Abrams of Hartsburg said public land is precious to city dwellers and others who don’t own land in the country. <snip>

2. The same has happened in (gasp) South Carolina.
People in the environs of Francis Marion NF have petitioned the federal government to not sell off parcels in their area.

Why does the Democratic Party not grasp the stick of the Environment and beat the rethugs bloody with it? It is a superb wedge issue, perhaps not a winner by itself but surely a weapon not to be disdained. I can only blame the corporate whores within the party.
