Forty Signs of Rain
Wandering thru the bookstore the other day, I ran across some new stuff by Kim Stanley Robinson: Forty Signs of Rain. I'm about 75 pages into it, and it's shaping up to be a sort of thinking man's version of "Day After Tomorrow." Or, maybe Coming Global Superstorm but without Whitley "I-was-abducted-by-aliens" Strieber.

If, like me, you're into climate disaster porn combined with KSR-style bureaucratic intrigue, here it is:

Cover features the U.S. capital building buried under snow.

3. KSR knows the weather material well
from the Mars trilogy and terraforming. I think the second book is called 'Fifty Degrees Below.'

5. I once read Margaret Atwood's "Rape Fantasies" in literature class...
There was much discussion of "rape fantasies" as a coping mechanism; a way of defusing the fear of an actual rape by imagining rape scenarios with benign outcomes.

I think maybe my fascination with climate disaster porn is my own version of rape fantasies. A way to defuse my fear of the real thing, by playing out scenarios where at least some civilization survives. Then I can imagine myself as one of the survivors. Climate rape fantasies.
