Shell Oil - Friend of the environment?
I noticed a two-page ad in Newsweek from Shell Oil which came right out and said that global warming is a problem and that immediate action is required.

"This is different", I thought. But is it real or just PR spin?

I've spent some time on their website and the company does seem to have some significant initiatives. They're even promoting conservation.

Check the link. Dick Cheney could learn a few things from a fellow oiler.

1. ITS CALLED "GREENWASHING"
and is a common corporate trick. Try reading "Toxic Sludge is Good For You" by Stauber and Rampton for an eye-opening education.

2. Greenwashing it may be
Edited on Tue Jul-29-03 03:10 PM by Pillowbiter
but Shell and British Petroleum are the only 2 oil companies that are actually funding research for alternative fuels.

So as far as evil companies go, they are at least the least evil in america.

Though greenwashing is a problem at times, Nike was caught in their greenwashing, but most companies can get away with lying because there is no one to call them on it.

3. whether it's "sincere" or not might not really matter
they've done a great deal just by saying what they've said. they have come out firmly against the inhofe crowd, and that means a lot. whether they're sincere or not, and whether they are actually working on their own alternative energy solutions or not, their public admission does a great deal of good.

first we need to make everyone who denys the problem look like a flat-earther, then we can actually force them to deal with it. we're making good progress with the first, i think.

4. I've heard Shell supported Kyoto
from someone who says he's against Kyoto. He seemed to think that the CO2 market would somehow get them into investing in 3rd world coutries and expand thier buisness. The guy seemed to be a bit of a quack though.

Has anyone else heard stuff along these lines?
