Ice and water
First, the bad. From the following, sea ice extent on July 31 was 6.56 million sq km, the second lowest since these records have been kept from 2002. Average melt from July 31 to end of melt season for the previous 9 years is 1.91 million sq km, giving a projected end level for this year of around 4.65 million, also the second lowest (2007 was 400,000 sq km less).

Now the good. Lake Powell on the Colorado River had their first decline of the year yesterday, the latest in a runoff year since at least 2001. Inflows this year are 188% of last year. Despite having already released 123% of the required amount downstream with 15% of the water year still to come, the reservoir gained 50 feet of elevation and now sits at 76.5% full. Inflows this year are 188% of last year. Lake Mead, further downstream has been the beneficiary of these releases, continuing to increase volume 5 months after the normal dry season reduction has begun. It now sits at 46.8% full.
