Doomer hyperbole taken to a new level of idiocy
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2011/may/09/climate-change-wi-fi-connections

According to the British Secretary of State for the Department of Environment "Wi-fi internet access and other communications are at risk from global warming". According to this doomer blow-hard, "If climate change threatens the quality of your signal, or you can't get it because of extreme fluctuations in temperature, then you will be disadvantaged, which is why we must address the question."

Come on, claiming wi-fi or cell phone communications is going to be affected by temperature changes is lunacy. If it were true then you wouldn't be able to connect to the internet at Starbucks or make a call on you cell phone in summer; but you could in winter. It's time put put away the DVD of The Day After Tomorrow and get back to the real world.

Changes in temperature can affect Tropospheric Propagation for certain types of RF, but not your wi-fi connection or cell phone.

An example of Doomer idiocy and fear mongering at its finest.

1. although wondering about the longterm viability of "the grid" is certainly worthwhile
...given all the mechanisms, delivery systems, fuel supplies, etc., its all reliant on, in order to keep functioning...

2. Fine
have a report that talks about delivery systems and fuel supplies. But spouting crap like this is inexcusable. Statements like hers begs the question, "if they'll make up crap about this what else are the doomers making up?"

3. It's financial meltdown that threatens Internet and telco service in the U.S.

Expansion of customer base faster than capacity, an unwillingness by corporations to maintain infrastructure, and cost-cutting to the bone are major causes of increasing service failures in the US communications grid. I've noticed the effects.

In the long-run, however, the economic impact and costs of climatic change may contribute to rising costs and erosion of many services we now take for granted.

4. More like denier cherrypicking and, well... denial on your part.
The article and the study raise good questions that should be looked into - which is its purpose.
"The report is on how the UK's infrastructure – from road and rail, to power stations, to water supplies – needs to be made more resilient to climate change."

So for a Minister to identify potential problems related to operations under their sphere of responsibility is actually being just that - being responsible. Of course there is the school of thought where government shouldn't ponder and investigate potential problems in advance, they should just let the corporations serve the markets.

If you have specific technical knowledge - of the published-in-a-journal type - that address the areas of inquiry identified, then you do something positive and send it to the authors of the study. I'm sure they will be excited to see it and will inform the government agencies affected.

7. Predictable. Doomers circling the wagons.
Rather than admit a fellow doomer is flat out wrong, you circle the wagons and shoot the messenger. Keep fear alive!

9. Airwave signals in my neck of the woods vary with cloud cover: quality of cellphone
coverage and TV broadcast are affected. People, who don't give a rat's ass whether coastal cities are flooded or whether rainfall patterns shift dramatically, might care about signal quality
