A San Diego start-up company that makes solar carports has agreed to provide General Motors with solar-powered charging stations for the new Chevrolet Volt electric car.

Envision Solar plans to provide two kinds of shelters, a six-vehicle model and one for a single vehicle.

It did not announce terms of the deal such as the cost or how many units will be produced.

The car ports, which the company calls solar trees, are designed to generate enough power in a day to charge the cars that they shade, said Envision President Desmond Wheatley.
