BP Oil Slick Now Threatens 60 percent of America's Tidal Marshes
And the travesty continues:

New data has been released showing that the massive BP oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico is already contaminating one major protected North American Marine Ecoregion, and is threatening at least two more.

The site of the initial explosion that resulted in the BP oil disaster is within the boundaries of the Northern Gulf of Mexico Ecoregion which as described by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation as a marine protected area that:

"...
contains over 60 percent of the tidal marshes of the United States, freshwater inputs from thirty-seven major rivers, numerous nursery habitats for fish and the Flower Gardens Banks."

1. There are fears the oil could start moving inland.
It just keeps compounding.

6. And that Corexit, due to it's molecular structure, could come back as inland rain
I believe the article is somewhere in E/E - definitely somewhere on DU, if you are interested.

2. I worry about when the storms hit
The Ecocide is bad enough but no one knows what will happen when a hurricane comes and moves inland.

Lost farm land?? Health issues?? No one knows, so no one can prepare.

3. I never thought about it that way...
Thanks for that. When I contemplated the effects hurricanes would have on the oil slick, I always visualized them spreading the oil out in the ocean. I never considered it being pushed on land and through the air. A pretty scary prospect.

4. what if
what if it rained oil on animals who never even went near the sea? never even went near an oil field. I wonder how much oil-rain it would take to kill chipmunks and squirrels and foxes and stuff  This is making me want to do violence on someone, seriously.

5. I live about 50 miles from the Gulf and have fibromyalgia, CFS, and several
auto immune diseases. I've had worsening symptoms for three weeks now and I can't help but wonder if it's due to fumes from the Gulf gusher or Corexit. If so, how many birds and amphibians are also ill or dying now, since their systems are even more sensitive? What about other animals, and how bad will it get if BP is the only entity that is ever allowed to try to stop the gusher?
