Bhopal gas tragedy: 8 found guilty, get bail
TNN, Jun 7, 2010, 04.53pm IST

BHOPAL: The seven Indian Union Carbide India Ltd (UCIL) officials convicted in the 26-year-old Bhopal gas tragedy case have been granted bail and released on submission of a surety of Rs 25,000 by a trial court in Bhopal, according to a Times Now report.

Earlier on Monday, eight accused, one of whom is deceased, were sentenced to two years in prison for causing death due to negligence.

Reacting to the development, representatives of the tragedy's victims and their families who have been protesting outside the court, said they would approach the Madhya Pradesh High Court to allow the slapping of more stringent charges against all those accused in the case.

The Magistrate court in Bhopal on Monday convicted all eight Indians accused in the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy case. A Rs 500,000 fine has been imposed on UCIL.

December 3rd 1984: Leak of poisonous gas resulted in the exposure of
over 500,000 people. The official immediate death toll was 2,259 and the
government of Madhya Pradesh has confirmed a total of 3,787 deaths related
to the gas release. Other government agencies estimate 15,000 deaths.
Others estimate that 8,000 died within the first weeks and that another
8,000 have since died from gas-related diseases.

390 tons of toxic chemicals abandoned at the plant continue to leak and
pollute the groundwater in the region

(Numbers from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhopal_disaster)

Since then we have seen ...

8 Indian officials charged.

26 years of living free on their wealth (1 dies in that period).

7 given 2 year jail sentences then immediately bailed thanks to the protection
of the corrupt Indian government.

1 American official charged (Warren Anderson - jumped bail Dec 7th 1984).

26 years of living free on his wealth (mainly in Long Island but also in his
houses in Vero Beach, Florida and Greenwich, Connecticut).

0 American officials sentenced thanks to the protection of the corrupt
US government.

> there is little hope that justice will be served.

Proof positive for anyone who doubts it: There is NO justice in the world.
