I just got the "2010 Presidential Survey" in the mail from the DNC.

ONe of the questions asks me to "rank 13 national issues by their level of priority."

So I'm looking down the list for "the environment" and I had to do a doubletake... it's not even on the list. the closest thing is "energy independence."

to paraphrase the 13 items:

the economy
regulation of financial institutions and markets
lowering unemployement
Iran
terrorism
Afghanistan
Iraq
Race relations
Nuclear proliferation
Education
Energy independence
America's image in the world
N. Korea

one would think that the environment - the protection of our nation's water, air, ecosystems, and other natural resources, and let's not forget climate change, would be somewhere on the list. I guess I'll write them a letter at http://my.democrats.org/page/s/contactissues

I don't know what bothers me more -- the thought that they don't think it belongs on the list, or the thought that they don't care what priority I think it should be.

2. Climate change, as a whole, even here on this subforum, is relegated to irrelevancy.
Despite the fact that we must act soon and in a very widespread manner to avert catastrophic climate change.

3. Environmentalism is changing
Edited on Tue May-11-10 10:38 PM by Go2Peace
And I am not sure that is good. We seem to be loosing sight of many of the deeper and important connections with the natural world. And instead are moving to a technological society that retains just enough nature to survive and make more things.

Many people think environmentalism is simply energy conservation and keeping some major species around. A lot of the ideas of keeping local ecosystems healthy and a connection to nature seems to have fallen behind.

6. When you have a society that places economy above environment...
...there ain't much you can do. Welcome to global corporate capitalism.

4. Why top at regulating financial institutions and markets?
That deregulation bullshit is what gave us this BP disaster. REIGN IN CORPORATE POWER!

7. Yep, externalize costs *immediately*. All emissions should be taxed.
That's government duty.

9. how about rewarding carbon absorbtion rather than taxing emissions?
Actually I think both at the same time is good.

but I think there would be a huge tide of innovation and development if there was a tax credit for anything that reduces carbon emissions.

10. yeah, it's a "Presidential Poll."
I left that question blank and wrote on the side, "Why isn't the environment and/or climate change on this list? Are you serious????"

I'm sure no one there will pay much attention to it.

Onward.
