Mass Audubon remains committed to wind turbine

February 26, 2010

In his Feb. 9 My View commentary, James F. Rogers of Save Our Seashore erroneously described the position of the Massachusetts Audubon Society (MAS) regarding construction of a wind turbine at its Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

He stated that MAS has "abandoned its plan" for a wind turbine because of "grave concerns about noise, risks to resident wildlife and migratory birds, and potential disruption of valuable habitat," implying that no turbine will be built.

This is not correct. As reported in the Summer 2009 Sanctuary magazine, MAS conducted a wind assessment at Wellfleet Bay and "found no significant potential threat to passerine birds from a proposed turbine." This is consistent with studies of birds and bats at six turbine sites at state parks in Pennsylvania.

The magazine article further stated that "the wind assessment affirms that Wellfleet (Sanctuary) can go forward" with a turbine project, and "it's only a matter of time before one goes up." The only questions remaining are of size and location. MAS is also seriously considering wind power at several of its other coastal sanctuaries.
