Plans Announced for World's Largest Wind Turbine
Norway plans to build the world's largest wind turbine--a 10 MW offshore wind turbine. Besides being extraordinarily large, the turbine will also feature some other advanced technologies.

News from Norway last week brought plans for the world's largest wind turbine to be built.

According the the announcement, Norwegian-based wind turbine manufacturer Sway will build a 10-megawatt wind turbine. Construction of the turbine will be financed by Enova, a Norwegian public agency, which has committed approximately US$23 million to build the turbine.

1. The bigger the better the wind turbine.
10 Megawatts is a lot of power.

2. Why can't we do this?
As a kid who grew up by the ocean I can appreciate that people want uninhibited views of the ocean, but a few dozen of these turbines along each coast could help put a dent in our fossil fuel use.

3. We ARE doing this.
The effort started in 2001 when the Cape Wind project was launched. Since then there has been an ongoing process of creating a mechanism by which the offshore areas under federal jurisdiction (these are public lands) can be used by "for profit" entities.

The creation of this regulatory regime is right now in its final stages where test leases are being issued.

Google "Minerals Mining Service offshore wind" to get a good understanding of the program and technologies.
