Favorite backyard chicken breed.
A couple of years ago, I did a job for a man who had chickens which I did not recognize. I asked him what breed they were and he told me they were "Golden Comets". My wife and I decided to get replacement chickens early last year and I said I'd like to try the Golden Comets and she agreed. We got 15 female chicks and they've done quite well. During the summer and until winter set in, we let them free range. They are less aggressive with each other compared to Leghorns and seem to tolerate the cold here in Upper Michigan quite well. The chicken coop is unheated but is insulated and I have the outer walls banked with snow. The 15 hens produce about 10 large brown eggs a day which is more then enough for my family with the excess given to nearby friends and relatives.

I'd recommend this breed for those who have their own chickens for eggs or are interested in doing such. I do not think this breed would be a good choice for those who raise chickens mainly for meat.

"The Golden Comet has been widely acclaimed in all areas where brown eggs are preferred. The reason is simple - they are one of the finest brown egg layers available today. They mature early and lay eggs of excellent size and quality. An extremely quiet bird that is able to withstand the colder, non-insulated laying houses. The chicks may be sexed by color - pullets red and roosters white."

"The Golden Comets are one of three Modern Day Brown egg laying strains from hybrid breeding that produce fast body development and fast egg production. These strains will start to lay eggs at a younger age than most standard breeds and produce big brown eggs."

3. Homesteaders love Buff Orpingtons as a combo meat/laying breed that
still has the sense to set on a clutch of eggs and raise chicks.

My personal preference based solely on appearance is Silver-Laced Wyandottes.
