You won’t believe this until you see it with your own eyes — and maybe not even then. From the GOP witness to the December 10 hearing on “Drinking Water and Public Health Impacts of Coal Combustion Waste Disposal <1>” — a medical doctor (!):

What does this guy tell his patients with diabetes — hey, people eat sugar every day, so go right ahead? Oh, and I’m sure he was against requiring safety belts and air bags on cars — don’t want to go down that slippery slope of regulating things to improve public health and safety.

After all, coal ash is “completely benign.” So go ahead, kids, sprinkle some on your Cheerios!

Happy Birthday Hugh! »

By Elizabeth Benjamin

A veteran of the Carey administration wrote in to note that today is the 51st governor's 89th birthday, adding: "I'm sure he will be pleased to know we have not forgotten."

So, here's a shout-out to Hugh Carey, a former congressman who was elected in a landslide in 1974 - the first Democratic governor in 16 years - and served two full terms as governor.

Carey is perhaps better remembered for his unorthodox actions (his offer to drink a glass of PCBs to underscore the fact that he believed they weren't a health risk, his unusual and abrupt choice of hair color (red), and his second marriage to Chicago real estate tycoon Evangeline Gouletas, who said she was a widow but turned out to be a three-time divorcee) than his serious accomplishments.
