Large solar farm proposed north of Reno

By Susan Voyles • svoyles@rgj.com • January 4, 2010

Vidler Water Co. is proposing to build a 100-megawatt solar farm, one of the largest in the country, at its Fish Springs Ranch about 40 miles from Reno in northern Washoe County.

If approved by Washoe County and regional officials, construction is planned to start in 2011 and be phased in over 10 to 15 years.

In 2000, Vidler bought Fish Springs Ranch, about 45 miles north of downtown Reno, for its water rights and later built a water pipeline to the Stead area to expand development. But the housing crash has stalled interest in homebuilders buying those water rights.

The solar farm would occupy up to 1,000 acres of the 2,670-acre ranch north of Reno, based on today's technology, Pattalock said.

1. Holy shit, one reactor
does that on a naval vessel, 10 times that in a modern nuke plant. Even on a shady day. No mention of cost

2. And, let’s not forget that those "nuke plants" can do something this plant will never be able to do
Produce long-term radioactive waste!
