Blue energy is a form of green energy, and it may be commercially viable in the near future, according to a doctoral student from Wageningen University.
Blue energy or electricity is generated by mixing salt and fresh water, and taking advantage of the difference in electric charge that occurs. Generating blue electricity is not a novel idea, it has been around for over 100 years.
However, doctoral student, Jan Post has conducted extensive research on the best techniques and preconditions for generating commercial scale production of blue energy from bodies of water such as seas and rivers. Post's research shows that it is possible to recover more than 80% of the energy from salinity gradients.
