Austin Climate Law Hearing Highlights: Rick Perry, Heritage Foundation, Refiners, Manufacturers
And you'll never guess what the overwhelming consensus was!!!!

AUSTIN — Scores of Texas politicians, regulators and industry representatives took aim Tuesday at proposed federal legislation to combat climate change, saying the bill would cripple the state's economy. The proposed bill would “make every product that uses energy more expensive, forcing hardworking Texans to bear substantial new costs and kicking a hole in our state's economic strength,” Gov. Rick Perry said.

Perry's comments opened an unusual daylong hearing on the federal government's response to global warming. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Public Utility Commission and Railroad Commission hosted the meeting. It came on the same day as about 100 world leaders, including President Barack Obama, met at the United Nations in an attempt to build momentum for an international deal to cut emissions of gases linked to global warming.

EDIT

The invited speakers included representatives from agricultural, manufacturing and refining interests and scholars from industry-oriented institutions including the Heritage Foundation and American Council for Capital Formation.

Joe Leathers, manager of the 6666 Ranch in West Texas, said the 139-year-old operation has endured droughts and floods but wouldn't survive the Waxman-Markey bill. The profit margin is so thin for farmers and ranchers that the projected increased energy costs would be too much, he said.

1. Just trying to keep up Texas' excellent reputation as the most-polluted state.
Perry wants that to go along with Texas' track record of having the highest proportion of health uninsured citizens, highest teen-pregnancy rates (and Dallas having the highest level of repeat teen pregnancies), and so on.

Just remember the slogan: Don't mess with Texas -- it will make its own messes all on its own.
