Poland plans 2.3% of its electricity from wind by 2010
While the others may twitter, Poland is moving ahead with plans to meet its goal of 2.3 percent wind power contribution (2000MW) to its electrical usage by 2010. This is part of the national roadmap to meet the EU directive that calls for 15% of Poland’s energy consumption and 20% of the EU's energy consumption to come from renewables by 2020.

As of the first of this year they had 451 MW installed. They’re struggling with construction projections, forecasting, and connections to the grid. That shouldn’t be surprising and isn’t my point: it’s Poland, a country that can hardly afford IKEA furniture and yet is moving ahead the best they can with what is for them an ambitious project.

FYI, the AWEA reports that the US supplies 1.26% from wind.

1. Can't afford IKEA?
You haven't been to the IKEA in Katowice on the weekend. Every time I have been there, they are doing a brisk business. Poland is moving up in the world, and projects like this one will help them along.

2. I know, I was thinking of a time not long ago,
maybe ten years or less, when the Polish recyclers would scour German villages during the yearly day when Sperrmüll(for Ami's, the large discard items) was set out. They would crowd the streets with cargo vans looking for still usable furniture, competing with the neighbors who were doing the same surreptitiously. Now it's the Romanians and Bulgarians. I know Poland is doing better now, and everyone is happier for it.
