Energy-efficiency steps on hold

Businesses lack cash to invest in projects, survey finds

By Thomas Content of the Journal Sentinel

Posted: May. 6, 2009

Businesses are holding back from investing in energy efficiency because of a lack of capital, the uncertainty about global warming legislation and the direction of energy prices.

Those are some of the conclusions in the third annual Energy Efficiency Indicator survey commissioned by Johnson Controls Inc. and the International Facility Management Association.

The survey, released Wednesday, is designed to gauge attitudes of North American executives responsible for energy in their organizations. More than 1,400 executives were surveyed.

Compared with last year's survey, there's a 10% drop in organizations expecting to spend this year on energy efficiency from capital budgets, and a 6% drop in commitment to spend on energy efficiency from operating budgets.

1. I was fortunate that LADWP had the money to upgrade my business's
lighting to more energy efficient ballasts/bulbs before the city started to go broke. My electric bills, while not small, have gone down a bit.

3. It's amazing, isn't it?
In your case, although the change is not immediately evident (you apparently already had fluorescent lighting) it really makes a difference.

I remember the first time it struck me that I was lighting the entire first floor of our house with fewer watts than it had taken to light a single bulb before… it was like magic!

I replaced 5 40 watt candelabra bulbs in m'lady's folks' house with 4 watt CFL's one evening. I said, “Look at that! and all of those together use half as much power as one of the old bulbs!”

2. I find this interesting on several levels.
Just a quick observation, but i noticed or haven't noticed any ad's on TV about energy efficient automobiles (Hybrids). Not many car ad's at all really, but the ones i have seen are for regular car and i can't figure out why!

We all know it's past time to start our green society, but i haven't seen much if any progress in that direction. I think it's time for a media blitz to keep people in the game, not propaganda but information on what's going on with green energy.

This country can be moved in the correct direction, but it takes a push sometimes.

Peace!
