This morning I was catching up on reading, and decided to review some reactor physics and technology in which I am only peripherally interested. I came across a paper called "Thermal-hydraulic and neutron-physical characteristics of a new SCWR
fuel assembly" by Drs. Liu and Cheng out of School of Nuclear Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China (
Annals of Nuclear Energy 36 (2009) 28–36)
The supercritical pressure water cooled reactors (SCWR) offer high thermal efficiencies and considerable plant simplification. From the technical point of view, nuclear power plants with SCWR are a combination of the light water reactor technology with supercritical fossil power plants technology. Therefore, SCWR is considered as a logical extension of the existing water cooled reactors. In addition, the SCWR R&D activities provide a great chance and opportunity for training young scientists and students in nuclear engineering.
That last sentence is the real key for doing
anything in my view. To make an eternal gift to the future.
We need more of that, not only in China, but in the United States and in the world.
Since this paper refers to nuclear energy, it behooves me to note that those who despise nuclear energy are precisely
the people who know the least about nuclear science.
The scientists being trained in Shanghai are a gift of defeated ignorance.
Ignorance kills.
