MEPs back 60% renewable energy target for Europe

22-01-09

Spurred on by the recent gas supply "crisis" over Russia's payment dispute with the Ukraine, MEPs have recommended pushing for a 60% renewable energy target in the European Union.

The increase on the existing 20% goal, set only last month for the year 2020 through the Renewable Energy Directive, formed part of a report seeking to influence the next wave of European energy legislation.

The MEPs on the European Parliament's industry committee want to see the 60% target reached by 2050.

After meeting in Brussels this week, a large majority of the committee backed the report initiated by its vice-chairwoman, French Liberal MEP Anne Laperrouze. The report forms part of the discussions on the Commission's Second Strategic Energy Review, which should lead to the next series of EU Directives on energy http://www.newenergyfocus.com/do/ecco.py/view_item?listid=1&listcatid=107&listitemid=1934">(see this New Energy Focus story).

The report also advocated more grid interconnections among Member States, new climate change targets for 2050 and emergency action plans to prevent future energy crises.

1. The only question is, will 60% renewables in 40 years be enough?

2. It'll be one whole heck of a lot better than 20% in 40 years
(Just sayin'…)

3. Oh, I agree
I just wonder if 60% renewables energy production will come about through choice, or dire necessity. When the heroin addict runs out of heroin, does that mean he's kicked the habit?

4. Do you want virtue? Or results?
There's a nasty respiratory infection running around the area. A coworker told me that a number of smokers he knows had to quit when they picked it up, and, having quit for a few weeks, and broken the chain of addiction, have quit permanently.

Since they quit by necessity, and not by sheer willpower, does that mean they haven't really quit?
