1. I'm beginning to think he's lost it
He is running against John McCain, not Sarah Palin. What is he trying to do, show that he's more qualified then her?

McCain is the target not Palin.

3. Question to bow hunters: Is shooting an animal in the face with an arrow
the recommended way to kill it? On the whole, it seems to me that killing an animal with a rifle shot would be more humane, or rather less barbaric.

And hey, doesn't that look like a young Track next to Mommy in the bloody snow? Her daughters all have dark hair, but his is lighter. Maybe if they'd sat his 8 year old butt down at the kitchen table to learn how to study, instead of emphasizing outdoor killing skills, he would have finished high school with a QPA of 2.0 or better, been able to go to college, and not have become a target in the Middle East oil wars.

5. For bow-hunting, I *think* the neck/throat or heart is most desirable...
speaking as somebody who knows a few bow-hunters, but has only ever hunted with guns.

I don't see (in that photo) any evidence of shooting in the "face." Does anybody else?

6. As I posted below
I don't buy that it was an arrow that killed the moose. Many people use bows or black powder on deer or even boar because it is considered more "sporting" but I can't imagine her doing it with a moose. These are big suckers.

As to Track, he volunteered for the army. He was an adult when he volunteered and I respect that. His mother is the governor of Alaska and I'm sure he could have landed a good job if he tried.

7. Yes, people do bowhunt for moose...
If it was me, I'd want to do it from a tree-stand at a safe height.

12. You are correct
I spoke to a yankee friend of mine after I posted and he told me that they do but he said that usually you would need to get within 15 - 30 yards to penetrate the hide and you would normally aim for the shoulders. He said a fatal face shot would be a miracle.
***Warning; Not very pleasant***
Normally with a shoulder shot the moose would run and bleed to death but after it goes down the hunter would finish it off with a pistol shot to the head. That might explain the blood on the face.

My friend is an avid deer hunter but considers bows to be cruel. He missed an 8 point buck last year from 9 yards!

8. Just because the moose has blood on its face doesn't mean it was shot in the face
The correct shot placement with an arrow is in the heart lung area. This results in massive bleeding and a quick death. It also tends to cause blood to be expelled from the windpipe and out of the animal's mouth, onto its face.

9. I would imagine it would be almost impossible to kill an animal from a shot to the face
If it got into the brain, yes.

If it got into the neck, yes.

Eyes, cheeks, or mouth? Unlikely.

10. Only an idiot would shoot an arrow at an animal's head, let alone its face
A hunting arrow has amazing penetration in flesh considering it has less energy than a .22 rimfire. However, its penetration though bone is not very good, and it would most likely glance off the skull unless it struck close to perpendicular.

4. Are you telling me that she killed a moose with an arrow?
I find that hard to believe. The picture doesn't show an arrow in the adult moose and I would be amazed at someone killing a moose with an arrow in the face. What range did she hit it from? From the photo that looks like a pretty open area and I doubt that she just walked up to it and shot.

Moose weigh in between 1,000 and 1,500 pounds. Moose regularly win collisions with cars.
