Volunteers Help Meet DNC Recycling Goals
There are receptacles throughout the Pepsi and Convention Center venues, but ultimately, it is the convention-goers' responsibility to put the appropriate items in each container.

"I think it's a great effort, (but) it's a little bit confusing. I'm never really sure which one to put my cup or my plastic in, but I like the effort," said one convention-goer.

Fortunately for her and others, organizers thought of that.

An army of volunteers has fanned out across the venues to direct people on where to dispose of their waste.

"Actually, I was impressed that I had two people wave me down to help put my trash away," said another convention-goer.

Waste Management is in charge of infrastructure, putting out containers and coordinating pick-up and delivery to the appropriate facility.

The company said it is weighing all the trucks going in and out of its recycling centers to get an idea of how much waste was diverted from the landfills.

The recycling goal organizers have set is lofty.

"The overall goal is to reach 85 percent diversion. We think it's possible. We may exceed that," said Charles Bayley, of Waste Management.

Some convention participants expressed concern that large bags of signs were being thrown in the trash.

KMGH located dozens of bags full of what looked like trash outside the Pepsi Center being sorted for recyclables by hand by Colorado State University volunteers. :woohoo:
