18 killed in latest Chinese mine accident
Edited on Tue Aug-19-08 07:47 PM by Dead_Parrot
BEIJING: Eighteen of 25 miners trapped in a coal mine after an explosion on Monday have died and the fate of the rest is unknown, a government office said.

The blast occurred Monday at the Baijiagou mine in Faku, a county in the northeast province of Liaoning, the State Administration of Work Safety said Tuesday in a posting on its Web site.

Fifty-six miners escaped without injury, the notice said.

China's mines are the world's most dangerous with more than 3,700 deaths a year in explosions, fires and floods. Many accidents are blamed on small mines with low safety standards, or those operating illegally.

Also, Accident kills 3 at Evraz coal mine in Siberia.

Hey ho.

2. "more than 3,700 deaths a year in explosions, fires and floods"
Maybe people would give a fuck if the above was converted
into more meaningful units:

Coal miners in China alone suffer 65 Ch/yr (Chernobyls per year).

Mind you, the above is only the "normal business" rate for coal mines
over there (mercifully better in most countries) and doesn't include
any deaths from the *use* of the coal extracted ...

(There were 57 direct deaths at Chernobyl according to the WHO
but if you want to start including the "possible 4000-9000 extra
cancer cases in the vicinity" then we can compare the followup
deaths for the breathing issues, acid rain, blah blah ... and coal
will *still* get a free pass - even if they dig up in the sacred
burial ground of some local tribe ...)

Hey ho indeed.
