Poll question: Are we going to pass last year's Arctic melt record? Record your prediction!
Up until last week, we were well above last year's totals, but in the last few days the gap has been closing. There's still a few more weeks of melt, and the Arctic is looking very slushy.

1. We may not surpass it.
We might equal it, though. And if we do, that sets the stage for a major collapse next year, as the vast majority of Arctic ice will be two years old or less. That makes the entire ice cap extremely vulnerable to smaller warming events, like the warm air being drawn into the Beaufort right now.
