Protesters had unfurled a massive banner near the tailings pond on Syncrude's Aurora operation north of Fort McMurray, Alta.
RCMP said 11 protesters had been arrested for trespassing. The activists were issued $287 fines. No criminal charges will be laid at this time, said Const. Ali Fayad from the Fort McMurray RCMP.
The Greenpeace group failed in an attempt to block a pipe leading into the pond after company security officers stopped them, according to Greenpeace campaigner Mike Hudema.
Syncrude's Aurora mine site was the cause of international controversy this year when 500 waterfowl died after landing on a tailings pond, which holds the remaining clay, water, sand, hydrocarbons and heavy metals that are the result of the extraction process ...
