This story appeared in the Manchester Guardian Weekly. It illustrates how it is not impossible to refertilize seemingly dead and useless land, that biology is a soft science and much can be done in a short time to improve conditions for farmers worldwide through sensible, sustainable practices.
It does take labor, I grant you that. Farming intelligently is hard freaking work. But then people in this country talk about going back to the land, growing their own. It's about survival and getting off oil. It's also about sequestering co2 but you can go to biopact.com for more on that.
