GOP bashes bike to work
No doubt, the GOP has a dreamy supply-side plan to fix everything.

“Colorado families are struggling at the pump and the answer we are getting from Colorado Democrats is shut down oil and gas production in Colorado and ride your bike — unbelievable,” said Rep. Frank McNulty, R-Highlands Ranch. “I’d like to see how they expect a mother of three in my district to get her kids to school and to buy groceries for her family using a bicycle.”

2. Do they have no school buses in Colorado?

Just wondering.

Or send the kids to boarding school and cut way down on carbon emissions.

3. Remember these dumplunks only see in black and white...
Husband rides bike to work, when doable = mother must ride bike to grocery store...

Honestly, if you even try to show them the inanity of this thought...they will stare at you blankly..

4. Actually, he's got a point. Biking isn't feasible for many, for a number of
reasons. And this country hardly excels in public transportation.

7. So we should not invest in expanding bicycle access and public transportation?
If it's "feasible" for even a small percentage of people, it should be encouraged.

9. Therefore, we should erect a strawman about "shutting down production" and bash those who can bike?
Whiskey.

Tango.

Foxtrot.

8. It's totally possible.
My mother was legally blind and couldn't drive. She got along just fine on her bike, and when my sister and I were young, we both sat on the back of her bike. When we were old enough to ride, we'd follow her all over on our bikes. She didn't have to get us to school because she taught us to ride safely and get there ourselves. For shopping, she had paperboy baskets on her bike that could hold a few days worth of groceries. She was also very fit because of all her riding and instilled a love of bikes in me.

I have a set of detachable panniers for my bike. They're each the size of a grocery bag and I can take them in the store like the cloth bags people use, then hang them on the rear rack for the trip home. So, if I need two bags or less worth of groceries, I either walk or use my bike.

You can also get a detachable trailer for a bike if you need to haul a lot of stuff.

Bikes are great, the big problem is cars... when they hit a bike, the bike loses. I totally understand why people are afraid of riding on public roads. It's a valid fear.

More bike paths... more bike paths... and more bike paths are the solution.

10. He's guilty of the same mindset that bashes electric vehicles
Because an energy or transportation technology doesn't satisfy the needs of everyone, everywhere, all the time, it's a non-solution for anybody. I ride my bike to work (4-1/2 miles), but not when it's 10 degrees out or there is snow on the road. I'm in pretty good shape for a 51 year old diabetic, but I realize biking is not the answer for all. Weather, terrain, distance, and health all factor into the suitability of bicycling as a transportation choice. A great many more people could be exercising (literally) that choice than do now.

11. Highlands Ranch, like many "bed room communities" that vote Republican
will end up suffering more than most for their lack of foresight.

12. Highlands Ranch is a McMansion suburb designed for cars to the exclusion
of bikes and pedestrians. Like much of suburban America. They are only now beginning to feel the pain of their lifestyle choice.
