ALTERNATIVE ENERGY TO SOLVE FUEL OIL PROBLEM, MINISTER SAYS

Thursday, June 05, 2008; Posted: 10:03 PM

Surabya, Jun 05, 2008 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- AEGC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Alternative energy sources obtained from the sea will solve the problem of the increased fuel oil prices, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Freddy Numberi said here on Thursday.

He said Indonesia is an archipelagic country and surrounded by vast seas from which the alternative energy sources such as sea thermal energy and tidal wave energy could be developed for the welfare of the people.

"So far, a lot of marine potentials have yet to be managed optimally," Freddy Numberi said in a function to open an exhibition and symposium on Maritime Industry, Science and Technology here on Thursday.

Therefore, the minister said he would give a wider opportunity to businessmen and investors to develop the country's maritime and fisheries sector.

1. How does electricity from tidal and thermal energy substitute for liquid fuel like oil?
Unless they're WAY ahead of the rest of the world in PHEV or all-EV vehicle technology, what do they currently use fuel oil for that could be replaced by electricity?

2. How much of their electricity is generated by oil?

3. I don't know, that's why I asked
Everything I've found states they use large amounts of natural gas and coal for electrical generation. I haven't found much about their use of fuel oil, so I'd assume it is not significant.

4. I'd eyeball this chart as saying they get about 30% from oil.

And, of course, there are probably any number of other, smaller applications where electric could replace oil.

5. This is the first question I'd be asking...
Why is it that some people believe any alternative energy source will replace oil???

6. Given that we just shot a polar bear who swam 200 miles...
...The evidence points to "We're Stupid".

Sad but true.

7. Sure it will, it's called sails. LOL
currently all major shipping container ships are powered by diesel engines running on bunker fuel. A sludge like by product from oil refining. It's heavy, thick and has a high flash point. (aka takes energy just to ignite it).

I'm always amused by these types of articles that think only about how the lights are going to stay on.
