BILLINGS - "A wolverine equipped with a Global Positioning System collar wandered from Pocatello, Idaho, to the northern reaches of Yellowstone National Park - covering nearly 550 miles in seven weeks - in one of the longest recorded treks by a species known to be wily and elusive.
The walkabout was tracked by scientists with the Wildlife Conservation Society, who published the results of their study in the latest issue of Northwest Science.
The paper provides a detailed itinerary of one wolverine's travels in 2002. Researchers knew that wolverines can cover a lot of ground, but no one expected the animal to travel through three states, two national parks and eight mountain ranges.
"This guy kinda blew the doors open as far as what was known about long-distance travel," said Brent Brock, one of the paper's authors. The study was led by biologists Bob and Kristine Inman of Bozeman."
