HITACHI LTD. (TSE:6501) said Tuesday that it has received an order from GENERAL MOTORS CORP. to supply lithium ion batteries for more than 100,000 hybrid cars that the U.S. automaker plans to roll out in North America in 2010. The order is believed to be the largest automotive use for lithium ion batteries so far.
* To date, Hitachi has shipped such batteries for a total of several thousand hybrid trucks made by ISUZU MOTORS LTD. (TSE:7202) and MITSUBISHI FUSO TRUCK & BUS CORP.
* Because Hitachi has previously supplied electric motors and voltage control inverters for GM hybrid vehicles, it hopes the new order will lead to shipments of modules consisting of those parts along with the batteries.

I would prefer to see an American company with this order but anything to get these autos to the market is fine for now though.
