The Starving Ocean
http://www.fisherycrisis.com/

We thought the ocean was an inexhaustible source of food. And that it would always regenerate more creatures to replace those we remove. But today's ocean is failing to produce fish as it did in the past, and the reason increasingly appears to be an overall decline in marine nutrient cycling. Simple starvation now increasingly limits the growth of fish and other marine life. "Overfishing" appears to have affected not only the targeted species, but the ecosystem in general...and ramifications of this disturbance may extend as far as the ocean-atmosphere CO2 balance.

We have relied for too long on our initial misperceptions about how the living ocean 'works.' The articles on this website are an attempt to fit the puzzle pieces together in a different way, and to stimulate debate. The standard view still holds that the sea contains plenty of food for young cod in the North Atlantic...but reality clashes with theory: take a look at the codfish itself...or check out the controversial herring count. The general public needs to WAKE UP!! Even the whales are getting hungrier! Visit the new Grey Seal Conservation Society (GSCS). See the Starving Ocean TV documentary featuring Debbie MacKenzie, Dr. Martin Willison and Farley Mowat

2. How about "All of the above"?
Pollution of ocean waters and overfishing have probably stressed out fish populations, reducing their ability to adapt to the changing climate. We've exploited the natural buffers that keep the system flexible. Now the whole structure is so fragile that just one blow in the wrong place can shatter it all.
