Second BSE Case In Two Months Detected In Canadian Dairy Herd - MSNBC
OTTAWA - Canadian officials confirmed a new case of mad cow disease Tuesday, the second such case in two months and the 12th since the disease was first discovered in Canada in 2003.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said no part of the carcass entered the human food or animal feed chains. The cow was detected in Alberta under a national monitoring program that targets cattle most at risk for the disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

The agency says it expects to detect a small number of cases over the next 10 years as Canada moves toward its goal of eliminating the disease from its herds.

U.S. Department of Agriculture Deputy Secretary Chuck Conner said Canada’s latest case would not affect trade with the U.S. “This is no cause for concern,” Conner said.

And since the Meat Industry owns the USDA lock, stock and barrel we're never going to hear about it.

A meat processor near me wanted to test EVERY SINGLE COW being slaughtered to satisfy requirements for the Japanese market.

The fucking US government threatened to imprison him if he did. Got an injunction to stop him.

We can't have that....ConAgra and Tyson could never give up the tiny bit of profits to test every animal, so it's time to crush the little guy who can.

Welcome to the days of the New Robber Barons. The spirit of John D. Rockefeller is alive and well. :puke:

Maybe President Obama or President H. Clinton will clean house in all of the corrupt regulatory agencies?

I certainly hope so. :(

2. As you say, it's been in the US for years and years ...
... as has corporate ownership of the government (regardless of what
colour the president's tie might have been at the time).

There is always *hope* for change but it doesn't look promising ...
:-(

3. They can produce unsafe beef here in the US, but they can't make me
buy it.

4. I have a lot of respect for vegans and vegetarians.....
...but I can't be one of them. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool omnivore.

Oh well, as HST said: "Buy the ticket- take the ride."

It's not easy to find good, unfooled-around with, local food. But it's getting easier; people are waking up and demanding it.

5. My DS and BIL in WI get their beef and chicken direct from
a farmer who uses organic standards but isn't certified (he's SMALL). And it's FABULOUS meat. They also are part of a local organic CSA for their veggies (and some fruits?).

6. It isn't the cost of testing that they fear. It is the precedent of allowing testing that they fear.
If testing were allowed, then more cases of BSE would surface and people would wake up to the fact that the delicious hamburger at their favorite fast food restaurant is poisoning their brains.

Remember when dairies wanted to put labels on their products that they were using milk from cows NOT being injected with rBGH growth hormone? The corporations weren't able to outlaw such a practice outright, so they pushed through legislation that forced the dairies to put a disclaimer on their products that said that there is "no difference" in milk from cows given rBGH compared to milk from cows that are not.

Many farmers who used rGBH for a while stopped using it when their cows developed mastitis and other problems from using rBGH.

We are seeing similar actions by Monsanto, ConAgra, and others with respect to genetically modified foods. They go to great lengths to hide what they are doing so that they can suppress unfavorable information when "problems" arise with the products they sell. It isn't the cost of testing. People would probably be outraged if they knew how tainted the food supply has become in order to increase the profits of these corporations.
