POUGHKEEPSIE - The chairman of the Dutchess County Legislature's Environmental Committee has proposed adding solar power to at least half of the 20 buildings owned by the county.

Joel Tyner said using solar energy would be a good way to reduce the county's dependence on fossil fuels.

Tyner, D-Clinton, said it would cost about $1 million to install the necessary systems but that the cost would be offset by eventual savings.

"One million dollars compared to a $400 million annual county budget - we're talking about $1 million bonded out," he said. "There is no reason whatsoever that Dutchess County cannot move ahead in 2008 and 2009."
