NEW PUSH FOR GREEN ENERGY

Britain's hopes of meeting tough new green energy targets will rest on the Westcountry as ministers pave the way for a massive investment in technology to harness the region's wind and tidal power.

Pressure will increase for thousands of new wind turbines across the landscape and coastline to meet expected demands from Brussels for the UK to up the proportion of its energy from renewables from 2 per cent to 15 per cent by 2020.

Business Secretary John Hutton last night called for a "major expansion" of green power to help tackle climate change.

Plans are already in place to open up the coastline to a massive expansion in offshore wind farms which ministers hope could provide enough electricity to power the equivalent of all of the UK's homes by 2020.
