FirstEnergy Corp. has quietly dropped its $200 million insurance claim for damage to Davis-Besse's old reactor head, offering no explanation beyond a statement in which a spokesman said it was "the best course of action for the company."...

The Ottawa County nuclear plant's old reactor head came within weeks of bursting in 2002...

The utility has paid a record $33.5 million in fines for lying to the government about Davis-Besse's operating status in the fall of 2001, weeks before the historic 2002 shutdown.

"It's easy to understand why they dropped their claim. It was radioactive," said U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, a Cleveland Democrat and presidential candidate who has repeatedly called upon the NRC to revoke FirstEnergy's license...
