Washington - It may take a village to make a war, American researchers suggested on Monday after analyzing artifacts from an early Mexican battle.

Although primitive tribes were known to have fought, full-scale warfare may not have evolved until societies became settled down in villages, the team at the University of Michigan said.

Archeologists Kent Flannery and Joyce Marcus used radiocarbon dating to determine that burned palisade posts from a site in Oaxaca, Mexico, were 3 000 years old. The palisades appear to have been defensive structures.

"War is well documented in ancient states and empires," they wrote in their report, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
